Lanzhou was under the regime of western Qiang in the Zhou Dynasty. It was a part of the Longxi Prefecture during the Emperor Zhaoxiang period the Qin Dynasty in the time of Warring States. A Jincheng Prefecture was set up here in the 6th year of the Emperor Zhao period in the Western Han Dynasty (81 BC). The title 'Lanzhou' appeared for the first time in history when a commander prefecture of Lanzhou was established here in 581AD, the first year of Emperor Wen with a title of emperor's reign called Kai-Huang in the Sui Dynasty. It became the capital of Gansu Province in 1666, the fifth year of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty. It was regulated as a city in 1941.
