Geographical Position
Anning District is located between 36©b 04' and 36©b 10' N and between103©b 34' and 103©b 47' E in the northwest of Lanzhou City at the northern bank of the Yellow River. The district adjoins Gaolan County in the north, Qilihe District in the south, Chengguan District in the east and Xigu District in the west. Its total area covers 86 sq. km and the distance from here to the center of the city is only 5 km.
Landforms
Geographically speaking, the district is higher in the north and lower in the south with an inclination from northwest to southeast and is shaped like a ribbon from the east to the west. Its terraced landforms are composed of riverain field, plains and hilly land gradually from the south up to the north with the highest elevation of 2,067.2 m and the lowest at 1, 517.3 m.

And it is rich for both surface and underground water in good quality. The electricity is abundant in supply as connected with the largest central network of hydro- electricity supply on the upper reaches of the Yellow River.
There are several places attractive to tourists in the district, such as the Tianfu Shagong, a fantastic scene of soil erosion and the Renshoushan Park. Near the park, there is a famous peach orchard stretching for 15 km. When peach flowers are in full blossom during spring time, the place is always busy with visitors.

There are12 nationalities inhabited in this district, such as Han, Hui, Mongolian, Man and Uighur, among whom the Han nationality makes 98.8% of the total.
HISTORICAL EVOLUTION
The district has a history of over 2,000 years. It has been a part of Lanzhou ever since the West Han Dynasty (206BC - 7AD), despite of the differences in titles and administrative subordination in each corresponding historical period.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Since China adopted the policy of opening up to the outside world and economic reform, the district's economy has witnessed a rapid progress both in its urban and rural areas with a large increase in its revenue. Infrastructure improved in an all around way, its comprehensive economic strength has been immensely increased. Today, the urban construction has preliminarily taken shape and residents' life is largely improved.
It is the only district mainly producing cash crops in the City of Lanzhou. There are 1,330 hectares of cultivated land here with better conditions for agricultural development. It mainly produces vegetables and fruits. Each year, the district supplies onto the market over 50,000 tons of fine vegetables, such as hotbed chives, cucumber, chili and tomatoes as well as more than 10,000 tons of quality fruits, mainly peach, pear, apple and dates. Its rural economy has witnessed a comprehensive development. Township enterprises are also booming.
There are erected 21 industrial enterprises in large and medium sizes. Their representatives are Changfeng Machinery Plant, Wanli Mechanical & Electrical Factory, Lanzhou Aviation Control Appliances Factory and Gansu Aluminum Industrial Co. Most of the city's industries in the aspects of space technology, meters and gages, and metallurgy are concentrated here.
Business and trade in the district are progressing vigorously. At present, there are 2,713 establishments on the network of business, catering and service of various kinds and 9 varied open markets. The Yellow River Market is one of the 11 markets dealing with traditional Chinese herb medicine, which is to be reserved and inspected by the state and the only one of this kind in Gansu Province. It is also one of the 10 regional wholesale markets in the city.
The district is designated as an experimental developing zone by the city government. Also located here are the western part of LHNTDZ and the Lanzhou Economic & Technical Development Zone. Besides, there is delimited a provincial demonstration zone for township industrial collaboration between eastern and western regions.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
The district has facilitated its local transportation and advanced its telecommunications. It is only 2 km from the center of the district to the Lanzhou Western Railway Station, a pivot in cargo transportation in the Northwest. The No.312 State-Invested Highway goes through the district. The Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport is to the west. In recent years, its previous infrastructure conditions have been transformed and rebuilt in a large scale. Together with a newly erected bridge, there are three highways opened recently, i.e. the No. 572, 590 and 596 Highways while some sections of the old roads either widened or rebuilt. A regulated and facile network for local transportation will soon be formed with the completion of the Lanzhou Yintan Bridge.
The overall capacity of its programmable-control telephone system has reached up to 20,000 gates. With the setup of the Lanzhou Telecommunications Satellite Signal Receiving Station of the domestic network, it possesses full means of advanced modern telecommunications respectively with optical cables, shortwave and microwave.
The greened area within its urban limits has expanded to 370.55 hectares covering 39.9% of the total area with the size per capita for 28 square meters.
Anning District is also regarded as a cultural area dotted with a number of higher education and scientific research institutions. There are 17 universities and colleges here such as the Northwest Normal University, Gansu Agricultural University and Lanzhou Railway Institute, and 11 scientific research institutions, including some famous one as Gansu Provincial Academy of Social Sciences and the provincial academy of agriculture. There are 30,000 scientific and technical workers here in those institutions and enterprises. Today, the district possesses 39 middle schools and 13 primary schools with standardized educational systems. The popularization rate for children's junior middle school education has come up to 99.3%.
