Lanzhou
is an important base in developing science, technology and education
in West China. It possesses nearly 700 institutions undertaking
scientific research and development in various fields with Chinese
Academy of Sciences Lanzhou Branch as the mainstay. There are
9 emphasized state labs in the city with the heavy-ion accelerator's
as their representative. Also set up here are 13 key labs at both
state and provincial levels. Nearly 300,000 professional technical
workers specialized in different domains are working in the city,
among whom 13 are academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences
and Chinese Academy of Engineering. In addition, there are 14
institutions and 88 departments authorized to confer titles of
Ph. D and MA degrees. The city's scientific and technical talent
density ranks the 4th position among the large and medium-sized
cities in China with its comprehensive strength of science and
technology listed at the 19th. |

schools and polytechnic schools and 1,558 middle and primary schools
in Lanzhou with more than 700,000 students in total. |
| Founded
in 1909, Lanzhou University possesses different branches
of learning, which is one of the firstly authorized ones
to confer the Ph D degree in China. The Northwest Normal
University and the Northwest Minorities Institute are the
key training centers throughout the country respectively
for fostering teachers and improving minority nationalities'
educational level. |
