| LANZHOU--- A TRANSPORTATION
AND COMMUNICATIONS HUB IN THE NORTHWESTERN REGION |
|
| Lanzhou
lies at the center of West China and functions as a bridge linking
the northwestern region with the eastern and central parts of
China. Converged here are the 4 trunk railways, namely the Longhai,
Lanxin, Lanqing and Baolan. Lanzhou Western Railway Station is
the largest cargo marshalling station in the Northwest and an
important center for container transfer on the New Euro-Asian
Continental Bridge. Highways within
the city boundaries are |

extending
in all directions.
There are already built 5 state-invested roads and 6 provincial
ones passing through the city. Nearly 50 county / township-invested
roads are also completed. Its land transportation port is now
opened to operation. The city has accelerated the construction
of several expressways linking itself with neighbouring areas.
Today, there are airlines from Zhongchuan Airport in Lanzhou reaching
to over 30 domestic cities and tourist charter flights respectively
to countries and regions such as Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong,
aiming at building the airport into an international one. Lanzhou
prospects a prosperous future as a key stop on the pipelines for
delivering oil and natural gas from the west to the east. It is
also a major joint on the state-invested trunk optical cables,
such as the lines of Xilanwu, Jinghuyinlan, Lanxila and Lanxcheng.
At present, there are over 600,000 telephone users in addition
to more than 300,000 mobile-phone customers. Over 40,000 users
are now having access to Internet. The city has become one of
the pivots in communications service and a center on the information
network in the Northwest. |
